Engineering the next generation of power plants.
Modern generation assets are no longer single-fuel, single-mode facilities. Gas turbines run alongside battery storage. Nuclear baseload integrates with renewables. Switchyards collapse into gas-insulated bays. At Barak and Brazos Engineering, we deliver integrated power plant design across GIS substations, nuclear support systems, and hybrid generation plants — engineered for grid compliance, nuclear-grade quality, and the operational realities of a decarbonising sector. Every design package is developed to reduce project risk, accelerate licensing, and support efficient delivery from concept through commissioning.

Gas-Insulated Switchgear Design
Complete engineering of GIS substations from 72.5 kV to 800 kV — bay layouts, SF6 and SF6-free arrangement design, gas-zone segregation, partial discharge monitoring integration, and detailed civil interfaces for indoor and hybrid AIS-GIS configurations. Designed to IEC 62271 and IEEE C37 standards.
Nuclear Plant Engineering
Balance of plant, auxiliary systems, and non-safety electrical design support for PWR, BWR, and small modular reactor (SMR) facilities. Includes safety classification (RG 1.26, RG 1.29) interface management, seismic Category I/II coordination, and documentation prepared to ASME NQA-1 quality program requirements.
Hybrid Plant Design
Engineering design for combined-cycle + BESS, solar + storage, and wind + hydrogen hybrid configurations. Coordinated controls hierarchy, point-of-interconnection studies, dispatch logic, ancillary services modelling, and physical layout optimisation to maximise asset value across multiple revenue streams.
Balance of Plant & Auxiliaries
Cooling water, fuel gas, lube oil, instrument air, fire protection, and waste-water systems engineered as an integrated BOP package — piping, civil, structural, and I&C coordinated under a single delivery cycle so the turbine island actually has somewhere reliable to plug into.
Grid Compliance & System Studies
Load flow, short-circuit, transient stability, harmonic, sub-synchronous resonance, and grid-code compliance studies using ETAP, PSS/E, PSCAD and DIgSILENT. Required for interconnection filings, AHJ approvals, and pre-energisation reviews.
Plant Modernisation & Retrofit Design
Life extension, control system migration (DCS upgrades), protection relay replacement, AIS-to-GIS conversions, and hybridisation retrofits for ageing thermal assets — engineered around outage windows, with documentation reconciled against decades-old as-builts.
— WHAT WE DO
Power plant design, end-to-end
— ENGINEERING DISCIPLINES
All disciplines. One roof.
Most firms coordinate between specialists. We eliminate that coordination risk by housing every required discipline internally — all working to a single quality standard and delivery schedule. For GIS, nuclear, and hybrid scopes, the disciplines below are mandatory; we run them as one team.
01
Process & Mechanical
Steam and water cycle design, heat balance, equipment sizing, mass & energy balances, process simulation for thermal and nuclear BOP.
02
Instrumentation & Controls
I/O lists, loop drawings, instrument specs, DCS and SCADA integration, hybrid plant supervisory controls, nuclear non-1E I&C interface.
03
Electrical & Protection
SLDs, GIS bay protection, busbar protection, transformer differential schemes, load schedules, motor controls, grounding and lightning protection.
04
Piping
Piping layout, isometrics, ASME B31.1 stress analysis, pipe supports, material specs and welder qualification documentation.
05
Civil & Structural
Equipment foundations, turbine pedestals, GIS building structures, seismic Category I qualification, piperacks, civil grading to IBC & ASCE 7.
01
Conceptual & FEED
Technology selection across gas, nuclear, renewable and hybrid options. Preliminary plot plans, CAPEX bands, AIS vs GIS trade studies, site constraint assessments. We help you choose the right plant before the budget is locked.
02
Detailed Process Engineering
Full SLD and P&ID development, equipment datasheets, short-circuit and load-flow calculations, GIS bay drawings, nuclear interface specs, hybrid controls philosophy. All documentation formatted to your standards.
03
Multidisciplinary Detail Design
Civil/structural, primary plant, protection & control, earthing and auxiliary systems developed concurrently — coordinated in-house, not handed off. BIM-enabled. One quality review cycle covers all disciplines.
04
Construction & Commissioning Support
Drawing revision management, RFI response, vendor data review, FAT/SAT support, as-built redlining. A live engineering team through commissioning — not a one-off handover.
— How We Engage
From concept to construction-ready.
We can enter at any phase and integrate directly with your programme. Most clients bring us in at FEED or detailed design — the earlier the better.
— Let's Engineer Your Next Project
Power plant engineering you don't have to manage
Scoping a greenfield GIS switchyard, designing the BOP for an SMR site, or integrating a battery block into an existing combined-cycle plant — we'd like to talk. Most engagements start with a one-hour scoping call. No deck, no pre-sales theatre, just engineers on a call.
